In Broward County, Broward County’s Sea Turtle Conservation Program (BCSTCP) and Nova Southeastern University’s Oceanographic Center students scour the beaches in the early morning searching for sea turtle nests. Each year they require supplies in order to mark and protect each nest. The National Save the Sea Turtle Foundation (NSTSTF) helps to offset the cost of the materials needed through their Adopt-a-Nest program, which donates half of all proceeds directly to the BCSTCP to protect the nests and 25 to 30 percent to other conservation programs.
Sea turtles have very low survival rates—only 1 in 1,000 to 10,000 will survive to reproductive age. By adopting a nest with a $40 donation, you are assisting in the protection of a nest on the beach. You will be assigned a nest with your name on the stake marking the nest. You will receive a certificate, picture of the nest, and information on how many hatchlings your gift helped to support.
For the 2014 nesting season, the NSTSTF was able to donate $5,440 to BCSTCP from a record- breaking year of 270 nest adoptions, which the foundation has already surpassed this year. If you are interested in adopting a nest, visit TheSeaTurtleStore.com.
