National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Broward County is pleased to announce Broward Public Defender, Howard Finkelstein, as an Honorary Chair of the second South Florida NAMIWalk. “Walking for Mental Health” will be held Saturday, November 8, at Tradewinds Park, Coconut Creek. Last year had over 750 participants and 2014 is expected to be more of a success. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and the Walk at 9:30 a.m., rain or shine.
The goal is to raise money and awareness of the need for Broward County to support a world-class treatment and recovery system for people with mental illness. All proceeds will be used locally by NAMI to provide support to people with mental disorders and their families, to advocate for improved opportunities for housing, and to support public education programs designed to help eliminate the pervasive stigma surrounding severe mental illness.
In addition to a 5k walk, the event will include a DJ, morning warm-up, doggie treats and pet water station, chair massages, arts and crafts, line dancing, face-painting, games, vendors, pet parade with awards, and more.
